In flight meal service
Virgin wanted to undertake a complete overhaul of the airline’s economy meal service to create a more environmentally sustainable approach, supported by a better user experience. To achieve this they commissioned product design consultancy MAP to conceptualise the tray set, while Bibliothèque were appointed to develop the supporting graphic language.
The friendly and inclusive design solution uses emotive, food-centric typographic textures and patterns in multiple languages, reflecting the airline’s global customer base.
The new product and packaging concepts worked in a more ergonomic manner, saving space and minimising waste. Carefully sourced materials were used to minimise weight, saving 132kg in total per aircraft. Compared with the fuel-burn from the weight of the previous dining service, the new service delivers a 4% reduction in CO² emissions.
